What happened

Students report finance, stock-market, and wealth-management 'internships' where onboarding requires opening a demat or trading account with a specific broker linked to the company. Tasks focus on bringing in account openings, mutual-fund sales, or insurance products from friends and family rather than research or analysis. Stipends are often tied to sales commissions. This pattern appears across several firms marketing finance careers to college students.

Why it seemed suspicious

Real analyst or research internships do not require you to open brokerage accounts. Compensation tied to selling financial products to your network, regulatory gray areas, and pressure to use personal contacts for account openings.
