What happened
Many companies advertise 'Business Development' or 'Growth' internships to students, but the day-to-day work is selling the company's own training courses, workshops, or subscriptions to classmates and WhatsApp contacts. Certificates, letters of recommendation, and stipends are often conditional on hitting sales targets. Students who expected market research, partnerships, or strategy work report being misled by the job title. This is distinct from legitimate sales internships where the role is clearly disclosed upfront.
Why it seemed suspicious
Misleading job titles, compensation tied to course sales, pressure on personal networks, meetings that deny being 'sales' while pitching products, and certificates withheld unless quotas are met.
